From the incredibly cool to outright crazy, there are a lot of jobs online that many have never heard of. Our free webinar training discusses how to make money online successfully, and we thought we’d expand on that by outlining some of the craziest online jobs! There are many brave souls out there who aren’t afraid to forge a new path. This type of freelancer is perfect to work on something a little more abstract, such as writing property descriptions, fortune cookies, and more. Curious? Read about some of the most bizarre and cool online jobs out there and see if any of them sound exciting!
Freelance Genealogist
IndyLife reveals quite an interesting online job — being a freelance genealogist! It turns out this online job is a growing profession and can bring in a lot of profit for freelancers.
Last year I moved into the house of my dreams. Built by a man who did business with the George Washington, I knew these walls had stories, and I wanted the scoop. So I signed up for an online history resource and began my research. If you’ve ever dug into the past, you know it can lead to some seriously time-consuming rabbit holes. I wondered if I could outsource the job. Sure enough, a quick web search showed me that freelance genealogy is a real, growing practice. Anthony Adolph is a great example of the thriving (yes, B2B) career possibilities. Adolph uses his status as an indy worker to convince clients to choose him over larger firms. “As a freelance professional I have none of the substantial overheads that the large research firms incorporate into their charges,” he writes. “This freedom enables me to devote much more of your money to original research.”
Property Description Writer
Do you enjoy writing? If you want to broaden your horizons, you may want to consider writing property descriptions! Freelancer’s Union discusses how to secure a job like this and how it can help people in the real estate industry.
When you’re scanning magazines, newspapers, and online real estate listings, the property descriptions are often written by freelance copywriters. Real estate writing is a specialty. You’ll enjoy this if you enjoy interior design or architecture. Just reach out to your local real estate agency — and if they don’t already hire a professional, send them a link to their misspelled, poorly worded house description, showing them how your services could really boost their business.
Fortune Cookie Writer
If you’ve ever wondered who writes those clever fortune cookie fortunes, it’s freelance writers either in-house or on the web! According to Business Insider, they earn up to $40,000 a year!
Fortune cookie writer is a real job, done by real people. Fortune cookie manufacturers usually hire freelancers or in-house writers to come up with inspiring or witty fortunes. EHow.com estimates that these professionals earn around $40,000 a year.
Online Bio Writer
Not everyone enjoys writing their own biography, whether it’s for an online profile or something more extensive. Writer’s Job Board further explains how hiring — or becoming — an online bio writer can benefit you.
As an educational writer, I had the opportunity to learn about many personalities, including artists, from various distinctions and domains. It’s hard to imagine an artist who doesn’t want to talk about themselves or their accomplishments — but some do exist. Hence, a new writing need is created.
Once again, a search through Craigslist or Kijiji may give you several hits for burgeoning artists, entrepreneurs, or start-up owners or those who are already somewhat established, in need of a short bio written for their website.
Perhaps time is a factor, or their talents do not lie in the written word when it comes to self-praise. Whatever the reason, bio writing is a good opportunity for the freelance writer to flaunt their own talent. The job can be lucrative and creatively rewarding. I did one such bio for a friend of mine who designed jewelry. Afterwards, she was kind enough to tell her friends in the industry, garnering me more work and more satisfied customers.
Freelance Presentation Designer
If you’re ever in a bind and need a presentation that’s sure to win over new clients, then you’ll be pleased to discover that there are freelance presentations designers on the web! If you have an eye for design and can interject compelling words in a presentation, IndyLife says this may be an excellent online job for you.
“Death by PowerPoint” is a common phrase for obvious reasons. When we find out that we have to present ideas or metrics to colleagues, most of us panic. And sometimes, bullet points can do more harm than good, a reality that motivates savvy presenters to hire freelance designers for a more visual storytelling experience.
Want to dabble in creating these experiences? Check out HauteSlides, an inspiring example of what’s possible. When you’re among thousands of designers bidding on the same website project, consider switching it up and pitching a Keynote presentation, instead. Look for clients who possess personality traits that are similar to your own, as this will make it easier for you to nail their style.
“If you’re naturally funny, leverage those skills in your presentations,” HauteSlides owner Magda Masterson tells her followers. Some weird freelance jobs — like this one — are essentially just more creative ways to sell the same design service you already offer.
Greeting Card Writer
If you enjoy writing sappy, or not so sappy greetings, then becoming a greeting card writer might be the perfect profession for you. Writer’s Job Board discusses this job more in depth:
The internet has made communicating a little more convenient, albeit a little less personal with the advent of E-cards. The online greeting card business is another good venue for the freelance writer to demonstrate their talents and versatility.
Greeting card companies are usually looking for a particular, or kitschy writing style. This type of gig is a good opportunity to display humorous, sentimental or poetic writing. There are even sites that offer more “risqué” cards, and therefore may require a more suggestive style of writing if that is appealing to the writer.
Forum and Chat Moderator
Freelancers Union also discusses another job opportunity – being a forum and chat moderator! It may not pay the best, but it’s an easy job and could be a way to let off some steam too.
Think that forums are “so 2004”? Well, they’re still going strong — especially for teens who are into roleplaying. Yes, you only get paid $10 an hour, but you can’t beat the feeling of Absolute Power of the ban-hammer. If you enjoy working online from home, check out companies like Metaverse Mod Squad or ICUC.
Online Reviewer
Balance Careers tells us that being an online reviewer is another strange yet fun job you can do online. We wouldn’t recommend doing “fake reviews,” but it’s interesting to know there are online jobs like this.
Thanks to review sites like TripAdvisor and Yelp, the Internet has become a highly valuable resource for consumers looking to get a sense of a restaurant, hotel, or product they might be interested in.
But, as a result of the anonymity of the online world, it's possible to post “fake reviews,” in which a real person makes a secondary account and writes positive or negative reviews that have little – or no – basis in reality, but might have a serious bearing on a business' reputation.
Accordingly, there have been instances of freelance “reviewers” advertising their services on websites like Craigslist or Fiverr, as well as business owners offering to pay writers to post false reviews. A study done by Cornell's Department of Computer Science has looked into creating a software that would detect “opinion scammers” who post false reviews.
Professional TV Watcher
Yes, whether you can believe it or not, there is such a thing as watching TV… professionally. Check out the details below, courtesy of Business Insider.
Professional TV watcher is a real job — but it's not necessarily as easy as it sounds. According to an Investopedia.com article, pro TV watchers ‘usually scan through different shows and news clips, and find the right clips that can be used on a television show or news program.' The article also says when Jimmy Kimmel was looking for a TV watcher back in 2005, his show was offering pay of $500 to $600 per week.
