If you happen to read the latest business news, you will notice that technology startups are all the rage. Technology in of itself has been hot topic in the last few years and rightly so. Our society is becoming increasingly dependent on technology to help us do many things that used to require great effort. For example, instead of actually needing to read dictionaries and encyclopedias for information, we can now Google whatever we want to know and we can have that information in a flash. With smartphones in everyone’s pockets and most people possessing at least one computer at home, not to mention work computers, tablets and other Internet-ready devices, we are on a tech war path and technology startups are the ones burning that path well into the future. Let’s examine a few of these tech startups to see what they do and how you can possibly start your own to change the world as we know it forever.
Google, Facebook and Twitter
Google, Facebook and Twitter were once technology startups and each has indeed changed the world as we know it. Google started out in a Silicon Valley garage, Facebook was dreamed up in a Harvard dorm room and Twitter had similar roots; and all three flourished when like-minded people and plenty of money were added to the equation. This is the ultimate goal of most of these startups – to start modestly and to grow bigger than life itself. In some cases, such as Google, the name of the startup becomes part of the English language. Unfortunately, not every tech startup enjoys this same type of happy ending. Some fizzle out before they even get started and others manage to get off the ground only to merge with a bigger company or change direction at the last minute. Yet every technology startup has one thing in common: they all started out as a great idea of somehow changing the world. Here are a few technology startups that did end up becoming something great.
Kickstarter
Kickstarter, as you may know, is a website that allows people to ‘crowd fund’ new business ventures. Whether it’s a new business, product, film, video game or anything else, Kickstarter will allow the person (or group of people) to get the funding they need to help the new idea become successful.
Like other technology startups, this venture started out as an idea by a handful of people and has since grown to virtually become a household name.
Tumblr
Tumblr is a super-simple free blogging service that has grown considerably since its inception. Like the aforementioned startups that become absorbed by larger companies, Tumblr was recently purchased by Yahoo for quite a hefty sum of money – $1.1 Billion to be exact. This is one of the attractive perks of starting a technology startup. The sole creator of this startup-of-startups is now a very rich man.
Netflix
People used to go to the video store to rent movies until this technology startup came along. Netflix allows people to rent DVDs through the mail or they can stream them live via their home, office or mobile Internet connections. The startup has literally changed the way we enjoy home movies. Like other startups, this idea started out small and has since grown into billion dollar phenomenon that is used by people all over the world. As technology startups go, Netflix is clearly one to emulate if you have hopes of getting one of your startups off the ground.
How to Start Your Own Technology Startup
If you have a unique idea that you think will revolutionize the world as we know it today, get a few like-minded people together and start looking for investors. You never know when an angel investor the likes of Ashton Kutcher who helped make Twitter and other startups famous might jump on board. While many startups never see their ideas come to fruition, you will never know if your idea will take off until you actually put some energy behind it.
If the latest business news has taught us anything, it’s that there are new technology startups popping up all the time. Again, some of these ideas will just fizzle out and become yesterday’s news just like Myspace or other startups before it, but you’ll never know if your idea is a winner or a loser until you put some ideas and ambitions behind it. So get some like-minded people together, start looking for investors and you never know, your idea for one or more startups may change the world as we view it today. Your idea may even become part of the English language like other successful startups we know and love today.
