Pinterest, everyone’s favorite pin-terrific social network, is moving and shaking, and the site recently underwent a series of updates that are sure to please casual users and marketers alike. The following are the latest recorded Pinterest updates as we head into the winter season.
iPhone App Updates
Many of the latest winter Pinterest updates are intended to make the site more user-friendly, and the iPhone app update is no different. The old Pinterest iPhone app used to be tedious to use and didn’t really accommodate the iPhone’s small screen. Now, the update is incredibly easy to use. When you want to scroll from pin to pin or from board to bard, you just browse through the items you see with a flick of your finger.
The iPhone iOS app also introduces a new interface where users can press and hold individual pins in order to make further actions appear. In this sense, the app has become much more responsive to the user’s touch and actions, which is great news for future Pinterest updates to the iPhone and all other mobile devices.
Winter Pinterest Updates to the Site’s Terms of Service
In an effort to make Pinterest easier to understand and to avoid problems with all of the site’s increased traffic, the Terms of Service have recently been changed. Now it is much easier for users to report alleged copyright or trademark infringements. This will prevent people from populating their boards with pins that don’t belong to them. The site has also dropped the word ‘sell’ from its TOS. Previously, the site mentioned that it could sell users’ content at will, and now this language has been removed. As Pinterest’s CEO Ben Silbermann explained, “Selling content was never our intention and we removed this from our updated Terms.”
Searchable Pins
Pinterest updates that will be of interest to marketers include the ability to search pins and expanded article details. The search feature makes it easier for users to find their own pins. This is perfect for those who don’t like scrolling through all the pins on their board. For marketers, this can be handy because of all the pins the typical marketer keeps on a board at any given time. This update makes it much easier to find the content you need, and users will also appreciate the improved ease-of-use.
The expanded article details allow users to click on a pin to see the name of the article’s author, the author’s title, a brief description and link. This helps users remain up-to-date with the newest news and trends and, for marketers, it’s a great way to get noticed.
Pinterest Updates for Brands:
Pinterest Analytics
While not technically included in the winter Pinterest updates, the site’s analytics platform is another update that you should check out if you haven’t already done so. Analytics technically launched at the end of 2012, but now is a great time to jump on board since all the kinks have been worked out and it’s always nice to know if your Pinterest marketing efforts are hitting their mark.
Rich pins represent another winter Pinterest update that technically launched this past summer, but again, now is a good time to take advantage. Rich pins are ideal for marketers because clicking on the pin will reveal elements like pricing, product availability and the source of the product so that interested Pinterest users can make a purchase. If you’re not using Rich Pins in your Pinterest marketing efforts, you should be.
Price Updates
This is one of the Pinterest updates that marketers should be very excited about. The feature allows users to get notifications when products they have recently shown interest in drop in price. This is essentially free advertising for you and it’s yet another way to boost conversions.
Social Ads
Social ads represent the last of the most recent and notable Pinterest updates, but it might be the most important for marketers. The advertisements can be seen in users’ search results and category feeds, and as they say; the more exposure you receive, the better your business will fare. Silbermann states that promoted pins will be tasteful and will never interrupt the end user experience. That’s great news if you want a non-invasive and yet highly-effective means for disseminating your marketing message.
These winter Pinterest updates are only the beginning. The social site has exploded its number of active users in recent months and the numbers continue to climb. You can expect more updates to follow as we head into the holiday season and the New Year; and as always, we will do our best to keep you informed.
