It really is true that in order to be successful you have to hustle. This does not have to be as bad as it sounds. Hustling now a days means to have a plan of your goals and how to achieve them. Think about the successful people in your life and open your eyes to the pattern that they have created. This would be their hustle.
Below are 3 steps you can take now to help you get into a pattern or your own sort of hustle for 2014
1. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
I’ve often told the story of how, when I was writing novels, I committed to getting published, asap. This was way before the Web. I gave myself ten years, to get a novel published. If I didn’t manage it, I’d give up my dream. My plan was simple. A book proposal (three chapters and a synopsis) a month. Forever. Until I died, or until the ten years were up… or until I got a book contract.
The result? I had a multi-book contract from the British publisher Macdonald Futura six months later.
Yes, it was a lot of work. However, I committed to that plan. I survived on four hours of sleep. I stayed up late writing (on a typewriter), and got up early in the morning.
2. You gotta schlep.
Schlepping is slogging. No one likes it. However, schlepping is part of hustling. You do what you don’t want to do:
We don’t like schleps, Graham says, and that dislike provokes an unconscious blindness. We are, unknown to ourselves, pulling away from doing hard stuff (like seeing your friend in Queens).
Make your plan, create tasks which will help you to achieve that plan. Then schlep. You don’t have to like it. Liking doesn’t come into it. Just focus on what you’re doing.
3. Focus on NOW.
Once you’ve created your plan and your tasks, focus on what you’re doing. Stay out of your head: keep writing.
As I said in this article:
If you’re just focused on your goals, writing becomes harder than it needs to be. On the other hand, when you focus just on what you’re doing as you write — when you get into a state of flow — you’ll become inspired. Time passes, and you’re not aware of it.
There’s no way I could have written a book proposal a month without focusing strictly on my writing. At the time, I had a job, and young children, so I didn’t have a lot of time to write. I wrote when everyone was asleep. I just focused on the words.
Every one can make money writing right now and in 2014. The opportunities are endless with more and more being created every single day. You should already have at least an outline for your business plan into place for this next year.
Have you decided on what you will be focusing on already or are you scrambling to prepare for 2014?
