Advertising online can be a tricky game, especially if you’re not quite sure what you’re doing. You could spend a little money or a lot on your ad spend budget, but if you don’t have the skills, training and expertise to draw prospects in droves, your money will inevitably end up down the digital drain. While skills, training and expertise take years to develop and accrue, the following tips will give you an edge no matter how green you happen to be. Put these tips into action and you will soon see results on any online advertising network.
Choosing the Best Online Advertising Network
Many of the online advertising tricks on this list stipulate that you’ve chosen the very best advertising network to spread your message far and wide. Only the best networks will put your ads in front of people who want to buy what you are selling, and you will also receive tools and sometimes training for getting a leg up on those respective networks. Choose wisely and spend time analyzing the best and most popular online advertising networks around before you spend a dime on these or any other online advertising tricks.
View Competitor Ads
The best way to find out how to succeed on a particular online advertising platform is to spy on the competition. Conduct a search on the network in question – whether it’s Adwords, Bing, Facebook or any other – and start clicking or otherwise viewing the ads your competitors have come up with. Examine the words they use, the URLs and landing pages they link to, the downloaded media they provide and any other information you can glean. Keep this information in a spreadsheet so that you can borrow and tweak it to suit your own needs.
Spend Time Learning
Many networks will provide you with their own online advertising tricks. Take Google Adwords, for example. It’s clear that Google wants Adwords users to be well aware of the latest online best practices as they apply to advertising online, but the network also wants its advertisers to be well aware of the rules. Don’t think of Google as some great dictator that demands that you bend to its will. Its rules are in line with what the public largely wants – quality ads that lead to quality landing pages and that are designed to appease prospects, first and foremost. If you try to cheat the game, Google will come down on you, and it’s all for the betterment of the Internet.
Google is but one example of an online advertising network that provides much needed help to its users. Yet, sadly, perusing the tutorial sections and reading up on the rules is typically one of those online advertising tricks that largely gets dismissed and ignored. Why? Mainly because some advertisers feel that they can learn as they go, which is not the way to go if you want to be successful. Spend time learning and you will be better off in almost all cases.
Quality Everything
As online advertising tricks go, this is one that may take time to get right. From the language you use in your ads to the URL, landing page and media – all of those things that we mentioned in the previous trick – must be of the highest quality if you want to maximize your results. This will require you researching your target prospects and finding what they are most interested in, as well as finding those ad elements that they most respond to.
Analyze any data the online advertising network provides you with, such as ad traffic, conversion rates and impressions, and use that information to further tweak and improve your campaigns over time.
Bidding and Budgets
The last of our online advertising tricks involves the money you spend on your advertising efforts. If you are bidding on ads, such as you would on the Adwords or Bing PPC platform, set your bids low at first and never allow the network choose your bids for you; at least not at first. Start with low bids with low minimum daily budgets and your overall ad budget will stretch much further.
Only after you are able to glean the proper data and make the proper tweaks should you increase your ad spend for even greater results than you are already experiencing. When you are first beginning with online advertising, however, setting too high bids and too high budgets will only result in you going broke for little to no results. Remember, think minimally when it comes to money and you’ll do much better overall.
As you can see, these online advertising tricks aren’t necessarily Top Secret and they’re not really shortcuts. They merely involve following the rules of the online advertising networks you choose and taking things gradually and slowly using data as your guide to scale upwards little by little and bit by bit. Take these tricks and put them to good use and your online advertising efforts will thrive.
