Without inventors, we wouldn’t have many of the innovations that we enjoy today. That iPhone or Android phone you carry around with you everywhere came about only because a multitude of inventors had the foresight and the motivation to bring their individual creations to light. Someone had to figure out how to get electricity to power devices, then the computer came about, cell phones, laptops and eventually smartphones. Inventors keep society moving along and in case you haven’t noticed, the inventions have been popping up and our society moving at a fast-moving pace. You can do your part to help society progress by bring your own inventions to market. The first step is coming up with a viable idea that others will find interest in, particularly investors.
Brainstorming Invention Ideas
Inventors use all sorts of methods to come up with genuine and unique product ideas that can be mass-marketed to a worldwide audience. Some people are just so inventive that they tend to come up with new ideas all the time seemingly by magic. Some ideas are improvements on current products and some are so out of this world that they’ll never see the light of day; but sometimes it just pays to keep your mind open in case the next revolutionary new product happens to spring to the forefront of your mind.
For those inventors who have to work at it a bit more, brainstorming usually does the trick. This is where the inventor will write down as many idea as possible, either until the pre-set time runs out or until the paper he or she is writing on (or the word processing screen) is completely filled up.
Some inventors will ask others for input and then expand on those ideas with a brainstorming exercise. Surveys, phone calls to friends and families and starting threads on popular forums to see what kinds of responses you can get (without giving too much away) are all great ideas for coming up with new and unique product inventions.
The Evolution Of A New Invention
If one or more of your brainstorming or data mining exercises produces a viable product, the next step is to sketch it to the best of your abilities. Be as technical as possible and envision each little part down to its most minute aspect. Your product can be physical or digital in nature, but you will still want to diagram your product so that you can show it to others. If you are really serious about your product idea, you will create a prototype, which is a physical creation of your product and the best representation of the actual invention that will be replicated for a wider audience.
Who will you show your invention to? A patent lawyer for one. A lawyer can help you navigate the complicated process of trademark and patent law, and he or she can help you file for a patent application. You will want to ensure that your idea is in fact one-of-a-kind and that no other patents of its type have been filed and/or manufactured. Note that not all patent applications become actual products. Some remain ideas even to this day.
To make your inventors idea a reality, you will want to woo investors. This can be done with a marketing plan, which highlights the ways you plan to make money with your new invention idea. Once funded, you can look for manufacturers who can mass-produce your product, if it’s physical in nature. For digital products, you may still want to acquire funding, but the dissemination process will be much easier, as the bulk of it will be conducted online.
Inventors go through this process all the time and some ideas pan out and some don’t, but the rule is to never give up. To become an inventor, you have to be willing to try and fail, as you will likely encounter several product failures before you think up that winner that revolutionizes the way we cook, eat, watch TV, recover from sporting injuries or whatever else your product is intended to be used for.
With the right product and a good patent lawyer, as well as a solid marketing plan, you can live the lucrative life of an inventor. Even though there are untold numbers of products all over the world and even more patents on file with the US patent office, you may still be able to come up with a product that revolutionizes the world. Keep dreaming up new ideas, never stop trying and make sure you follow the proper steps so that no one is able to steal your idea right out from under you. This is the life that inventors lead and it’s quite a fun and exciting one. After all, what other profession do you know of that allows you to just ponder and create all day? Try your hand at inventing and you may change the world as we know it.
